Anna Survivor
CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
Anna Survivor is a contemporary abstract artist working primarily with painting and mixed media. Her artistic practice has developed alongside more than a decade of professional work as a tattoo artist and her ongoing work in interior and architectural design.
Her background in different visual disciplines has shaped the way she understands form, space, proportion, detail and material. Each practice has its own language and limitations, but together they have become part of the way she sees and creates.
The name Anna Survivor is deeply personal. It reflects a life shaped by difficult experiences, having to build her own path and repeatedly begin again. Survivor is not about being invincible or constantly fighting. It is about moving through difficult things without losing yourself.
MY PRACTICE
I came to painting through other forms of visual work, but painting gave me something I had not experienced in the same way before: complete freedom.
When I work on a painting, I don't have to start with a clear idea of what the final image should be. I don't work from a client, a function or a predetermined result. I can choose the colour, material, tool, scale and direction as I go.
I usually begin with an internal state rather than a specific image. Sometimes I come to the canvas because I have been thinking too much, feeling anxious or simply need to stop thinking for a while. I don't try to illustrate those feelings. I let them become colour, texture, movement and layers.

HOW I WORK
I work intuitively and respond to what happens on the surface.
I use palette knives, sponges, fabric, spatulas, abrasive materials, spray paint and water. Sometimes I spray paint and then introduce water. Sometimes I tilt the canvas and let gravity move the paint. Pressure, movement and chance can become part of the composition.
I don't follow a fixed sequence. I can cover something I have just created, change the colour completely or leave something that happened by accident. I am interested in the moment when control ends and something unexpected begins to appear.
CONTROL / FREEDOM
More than ten years of tattooing taught me to control every movement of my hand. On the human body, precision matters. A line, pressure or depth cannot simply be undone.
Painting allows me to experience the opposite. I can make a mistake. I can change my mind. I can destroy a layer and build over it.
For me, this contrast between control and freedom is an important part of why I paint.
I don't always know what a painting is going to become.
I only know that I need to begin.
